The English major offers a broad and balanced approach to the discipline emphasizing genres, periods, major authors, central themes, and emerging trends. Focusing not only on primary texts, but on essential cultural, historical, and theoretical contexts as well, our courses help students to develop crucial skills of critical reading, thoughtful inquiry, and effective communication that will transfer to a wide spectrum of professional careers.

Program Requirements

Regis College students must complete the Core Studies requirements in addition to their major requirements. Core Studies consists of:

  • Core Foundation: 6 credits, or two courses taken over the fall and spring of freshmen year
  • Distributive Core: 40-46 credits that represent a variety of offerings in disciplines that provide the underpinning of a solid liberal education
  • Integrative Core: 12 credits, or four upper division courses taken in the junior and senior year

EN 353  British Literature Survey to 1789 (3 sh)
EN 354  British Literature Survey 1789 to Present (3 sh) 
Upper Division Requirements  (22 semester hours)
21 upper division semester hours of English courses, which must include:
Writing course (poetry, fiction, rhetoric) 3 semester hours
One course on major author* 3 semester hours
EN 454 Linguistic Approaches to Literature
EN 466 Literary Theory 3 semester hours
Upper division English electives 12 semester hours
Capstone Course 1 semester hour
